About us:

The Canadian Police Canine Association was formed in 1978 by several dog handlers who were interested in seeing how their counterparts were performing in the same job as themselves. The CPCA has grown considerably since those early years, however, our main objectives have remained the same:

  • To promote friendship and brotherhood between all those interested in the training and utilization of the Police Service Dog.
  • To unite and assist Police Departments in the training and continued improvement of Police Service Dogs.
  • To establish and conduct regular “Police Service Dog Trials” for the purpose of establishing levels of proficiency.
  • To provide educational material through publications and training seminars, and to coordinate the exchange of any advanced techniques of training in the utilization of Police Service Dogs.
  • To improve the image of the Police Service Dog to the general public.

  Memberships

Memberships are available to Police Canine Handlers and their associates. Annual memberships are available for $35.00 each or to K9 units at $50.00 per unit and $5.00 per member. (Example: The annual membership cost for a unit comprised of 9 members would be $50.00 + $45.00 = $95.00) For a membership application form(s) suitable for printing, click here. The Canadian Police Canine Association is a non-profit, non-political affiliation of peace officers employed in the handling and training of service dogs in Canada. Handlers and trainers from other countries may join, upon submission of an application to the board of directors. Peace officers, who are not handlers or trainers, or other person’s may join the Association as “Associate Members” provided that they are recommended by “Active Members” and approved by the Board of Directors. Your yearly membership entitles you to 4 quarterly copies of the CPCA magazine, the “LONGLINE”. It also entitles members to all the access and privileges of any other voting member of the Association.

  CPCA Annual Trials

The Canadian Police Canine Association sponsors an annual Police Dog competition. Each year, the CPCA trials are hosted by a different police agency. Unlike many other Police Dog competitions, our trial is not used as a certification or validation for these K9 teams. All dogs competing at this competition have already been certified by their own agency. The purpose of these trials is for the positive spin-offs of friendly competition, and networking among other dog handlers and their respective agencies. The Annual trials consist of either two or three days of competition and a seminar. This format has been very successful and has allowed for the Association’s continued growth and interest over the years. The highlight of these trials has always been a public day, which allows for the public to come out and watch our highly trained K9 teams show off their skills. Check this web site regularly for the locations of upcoming events and competitions.
